INSTANTÁNEAS DE TURISTA (1997-1999)

La serie Instantáneas de turista son fotografías realizadas entre 1997 y 1999 en distintos lugares de Santiago y los alrededores. Son el registro de acciones de arte en donde la artista es el sujeto fotografiado, que posa para la cámara como una solitaria turista urbana. Los lugares escogidos reflejan hitos urbanos en donde se refleja la cultura militar, la historia colonial, la apropiación de íconos de pueblos originarios, la copia de monumentos europeos. Reflejan un Chile en transición y sus referentes históricos. La ciudad como un campo para ser releído.

“Salía de mi casa casi a diario con un traje de dos piezas y una peluca rubia con brushing. Caminaba horas por el centro de Santiago, por el zoológico, buscando plazas, monumentos históricos, fachadas patrimoniales, piletas, monolitos. Cargaba bolsos con los elementos necesarios y trabajaba en locación, espacio que se transformaba en un paréntesis del flujo cotidiano.”

“Muchas de las tomas fueron aquellas captadas por transeúntes desprevenidos, a quienes les pedía que me fotografiaran. Las imágenes estaban confeccionadas mediante un procedimiento económico y se insertaban mejor en la acción.

En todas las imágenes hay dos operaciones que implacablemente se han llevado a cabo: la representación de un personaje por mi parte y el procedimiento de captura de la imagen por medio de la fotografía. Ambas operaciones son simulaciones: se simula ser otro al posar, se simula no tener mayores conocimientos de la técnica fotográfica al tomar la foto.”

Este proyecto constituye la primera obra que la artista exhibió, parcialmente, en Idéntica, 2000, exposición individual en la Posada del Corregidor, y en algunas exposiciones colectivas como Esto no es una exposición de género en el Centro Cultural de España, 2008; Imagen Local en MAC, 2011; Cambio de lugar en Centro Cultural La Moneda, 2013; Revisionar/ La inscripción de miradas en MAC, 2021, entre otras.

TOURIST SNAPSHOTS (1997-1999)

The Tourist Snapshots series consists of photographs taken between 1997 and 1999 in various locations in Santiago and its surrounding areas. They record actions in which the artist is photographed, posing for the camera like a solitary urban tourist. The chosen locations reflect urban landmarks that reflect military culture, colonial history, the appropriation of icons from indigenous peoples, and replicas of European monuments. They reflect a Chile in transition and its historical references. The city as a field to be reinterpreted.

”It's hard to go on vacation alone, I have tried. In general, holidays are carried out by families, couples, groups of friends or tourists.

I left my house almost daily in a two-piece suit and a blow-dried blonde wig. I walked for hours through the city center, through the zoo, looking for squares, historical monuments, heritage facades, fountains, monoliths. I carried bags with the necessary elements and worked on location, a space that became a parenthesis of the daily flow.

Many of the shots of the series are those taken by unsuspecting passersby, whom I asked to photograph me. The images were made cheaply and fit better into the action.

In all the images, there are two operations that have been consistently carried out: the representation of a character on my part and the process of capturing the image through photography. Both operations are simulations: it is pretended to be someone else when posing, it is simulated not having greater knowledge of photographic technique when taking the photo.”*

This project is the first work that the artist exhibited, partially in Idéntica (2000), a solo exhibition at Posada del Corregidor, Santiago and several group shows, such as Esto no es una exposición de género (This is not a gender exhibition) at the Centro Cultural de España (2008); Imagen Local (Local Image) at MAC (2011); Cambio de lugar (Change of Place) at Centro Cultural La Moneda (2013); Revisionar/La registro de miradas (Review/The Inscription of Gazes) at MAC (2021), among others.
